Cody's Great Day Fishing

I'm all smiles now but this was a pretty intense battle that left me with a broken tag line and an extremely bent spear but a day I will never forget. I went out with some friends on a boat which drops a huge net and does a big circle and then gathers all the fish. When they would drop the net I would bail off the boat and start looking for fish in reachable depths. Several times I was at the end of my 50' buoy line and a swell would come and suddenly lift me straight up. This fish was in at least 50' of water and I came down straight on his back, took my shot as he saw me, and made a run. My spear stuck him maybe 8 inches from his tail; an awful, awful shot especially on a fish this size as I soon found out. He let loose like a bull in a rodeo and striped over 200 yards of 100lb line within seconds; and finally after taking my line through several caves and tying more and better knots in my line than I know how to tie. He finally got locked up in a cave well over 50' deep so I had to take my buoy line off and go down and try to get him up. My first 2 tries failed and I was exhausted and thought I had for sure lost my spear for good. I took a 5 min breather and went down again and was able to free him, kill him with my dive knife, then cut my tag line and headed for the surface which seemed like miles away while dragging the beast. The best part about this whole deal is that in one day I now have full respect and friends for life from some of the roughest toughest fishermen I have ever met. Thanks PAPA for this blessing.
